Saving Our Own - A suicide prevention summit focused on firefighters and first responders, hosted by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Behavioral Health section

The conference will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Hilton Washington Dulles Airport Hotel. It is a one day conference. We will be serving breakfast and lunch for the attendees. We have booked nationally known subject matter experts to speak on the topic and the contributing factors that lead first responders to be at high risk for suicide.

The format for the day is as follows:

·       Key note address By Dr. Suzy Bird Gulliver, director of the  Warrior Research Institute of Baylor Scott and White Health. Professor of Psychiatry at Texas A&M School of Medicine.  She will be speaking on  the threat of Suicide as a reality in the fire service. She has worked in partnership with the International Association of Firefighters  (IAFF).

·       Presentation By Drew Kane, FDNY Counseling unit, on the contributing factor of substance abuse

·       Presentation by Art Jackson, Eagles Nest Performance Management and West Point Graduate, on the contributing factor of sleep deprivation

·       Presentation by Govan A. Martin III, retired Corporal, PA State Police, Co-Chair/Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Adult/Older Adult Suicide Prevention Coalition on the contributing factor of PTSD and depression in law enforcement

·       Presentation by Dr. Mark Kruse, Austin Fire Department Behavioral Health Psychologist, on the contributing factor of work / life balance issues

·       Finally a panel discussion with questions and answers

There will be no breakout sessions. Each speaker will present for an hour. The conference is scheduled for a hot breakfast for all attendees at 8am along with registration and opening remarks, then the key note address at 9am. The conference is ending at 4pm.
